Owner Demonstrates How Kitty Asthmatic Treatment Is Performed

This is the heartwarming moment when a cat who suffers from feline asthma is given an inhaler by her loving owner to keep her condition under control. Nine-year-old cat Pretzel has been filmed taking his asthma meds, which have to be administered to her twice a day.

Footage was filmed on January 13, 2018 in New York, USA featuring owner demonstrating how she administers asthma therapy to her 9-year-old cat on a daily basis. The poor cat was diagnosed with asthma 5 years ago, and needs to take his asthma meds twice a day.

Watch how relaxed Pretzel is when she is assisted in using her new equipment, which allows her to breath much easier, which resembles a human inhaler. Pretzel can be seen curled up in owner’s arms as she gives her the inhaler, looking like a baby feeding from a bottle. Adorable!

To treat feline asthma, veterinarians will usually prescribe corticosteroids to reduce inflammation in the lungs, with or without bronchodilators to dilate the airways. Both of these types of drugs come in oral, inhaled, and injectable forms.

Feline asthma is very similar to human asthma, it is a chronic inflammation of the small passageways of a cat’s lungs. When an asthma attack occurs, these passageways thicken and constrict, making it very difficult for a cat to breathe. This often leads to respiratory distress, which can become grave in a matter of minutes.

The lungs may also begin to discharge mucus into the airways, leading to fits of coughing and wheezing. Some cats with milder cases only experience a slight, chronic cough. Because asthma can quickly become a life-threatening health problem, any coughing cat needs a veterinary evaluation.

While there are a number of factors that contribute to asthma in cats, it is thought to develop as a result of allergic bronchitis. Allergic bronchitis occurs when the airways in a cat's lungs become inflamed due to an inhaled allergen or other substance that stimulates the immune system.
