"Babe," written by Dennis DeYoung, was Styx's fourth top 20 hit and only release to hit the no. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, landing there in 1979 (Whitburn, 2013). DeYoung wrote the song specifically for his wife, not anticipating that it would actually be released. The song was recorded "as a demo to play for his wife with bass player Chuck Panozzo and drummer John Panozzo. It sounded so good that when they decided to put it on the album, that demo recording was what they used, with just a Tommy Shaw guitar solo added on. All of the vocals are DeYoung, who recorded himself to create the harmonies" (songfacts, 2024). When Styx and DeYoung parted ways, Styx removed "Babe" from their live performances. The bad's guitarist, James “JY” Young, said: “We don’t play ‘Babe’ because that’s kind of Dennis DeYoung’s ode to his wife. And that song was a little too Barry Manilow for my tastes” (C. E. Burch, tucson, Jul 28, 2019). Fun fact, "Styx" was a river in Hates, according to Greek mythology (britannica, 2024).
