The Secret Kindergarten Radio Show for Young Children Ep. 35
Educating Girls Series

In this series we are focusing on the education of young girls. Gino pulls the Queen of Swords from his Tarot deck, and in this episode, we are challenging the attention span with “Big Fat Story-Time”! At around two-and-a-half to three years old, girls are more focused on solitary play and working with their internal world. Perhaps a good space to listen to long stories! We play a Greek myth, “Iphigenia”. We want to provoke grown-ups to consider what is appropriate for educating young girls. “Princess Programming” is very real and Gino realised how deep this program runs, even into his own actions when he was a teacher. The grown-up question for this episode is, how much does the State influence our values and expectations regarding the behaviour of young girls? We encourage adults to reflect on this, in the hope of changing the “educational landscape” to create a free world.

Now, back to Iphigenia...

The audio story is extracted from the 1908 book “Heroines Every Child Should Know” edited by H.W. Mabie: http://flyingchipmunkpublishing.com/Childrens_Books.htm#Heroes_and_Heroines_ECSK

The current publisher of the book states, “From very early times great honour was paid to courage and strength; qualities which won success and impressed the imagination. The first heroes and heroines were gods or demi-gods, or others, who did difficult things, not for themselves but for others. The men and women whose bravery and great deeds are described in these pages have been selected not because they are faultless in character and life, but because they were brave, generous, self-forgetful, self- sacrificing and capable of splendid deeds. Stories of heroes and heroines have often made others strong and brave and true in the face of great perils and tasks, and this book is put forth in the faith that it will not only pass on the fame of the heroes and heroines of the past but help make heroes and heroines in the present.”

The princess programming wants everything to be easy for young girls, to create an expectation that everything should be easy, that life should hand everything to the young girl as they wish. Young girls are powerful and beautiful. Like the Queen of Swords in the Tarot, young girls can use their power by thinking and speaking to maintain control in dire circumstances to create a good outcome for themselves and others.
