Alan's father, Roy Masters, experienced short-sightedness in the medical world after he got sick swimming in ocean water that was contaminated with sewage in front of his home in Ventura, California decades ago. Roy had to rely on himself to do the research he believed was necessary to find the solution to his problem. Likewise, Alan has found that his wife, Jan, daughter Rebecca, and others in his family have also relied heavily on their own research (and intuition) to find solutions in their own lives.

Alan also plays several conversation clips of his father Roy, speaking with callers on his "Advice Line" radio show decades ago.
