"You Are My Sunshine," although no one is 100% sure who wrote the song, some believe that Oliver Hood originally wrote the song in the early '30s, but Paul Rice claimed that he wrote the song in 1937; however, in 1939 Rice's wife was in the hospital, and they needed cash to pay the hospital bills. So, Rice sold the song to Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell for $35. "It was copyrighted by Davis and Mitchell and published by Southern Music Publishing Co., Inc. of New York" (americansongwriter, 2023; D. Sparkman, wideopencountry, Apr. 7, 2021). Today, "the records in the United States Copyright Archives state the copyright belonging to “Charles Mitchell (A); 2Feb67; R403742” (americansongwriter, 2023). Many versions of the song have been recorded, but the Pine Ridge Boys' version was the first August 22 1939 (greatoldies, 2023). After Jimmie Davis' and Bob Atcher and Bonnie Blue Eyes versions became hits in 1940, the Pine Ridge Boys version caught on, and their version rose to no. 4 on the charts (wikipedia, 2023). Nevertheless, Gene Autry's version from 1941 seems to be the most popular; it topped the Billboard Top Hillbilly Recordings chart and remained on the chart for 50 weeks (wikipedia, 2023).

Lyrics:

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
Then I hung my head and I cried

You are my sunshine, my only only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And nothing else could come between
But now you've left me for another
And you shattered all of my dreams

You are my sunshine, my only only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy
If you only say the same
But if you leave me for another
You'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine, my only only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
