Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp) (Allan Sherman, 1963). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-11-19. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

A Monty Python quote seems to be apropos here . . . "And now for something completely different." A bit of comic relief. "Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp)," written by Allan Sherman and Lou Busch, was Allan Sherman's debut release, which rose to the no. 2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963 (Whitburn, 2013). The lyrics are sung to the melody of "Ponchielli's Dance of the Hours" and are based on Sherman's son's letters, which he sent home while at camp (S. Lewis, wrti, Aug. 5, 2019). The song received the Grammy Award for Comedy in 1964 (genius, 2023). The song was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2020, which adds songs that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" (songfacts, 2023). Allan Sherman died of respiratory failure at the age of 48 on November 21, 1973 (New York Times, p. 40, Nov. 22, 1973). Sherman is one of many parody artists such as Weird Al Yankovic, Tom Lehrer and Tenacious D; however, parody is more historic. Mozart and Beethoven during the 18th and 19th centuries often created parodies of known operas (pianity, 2023).

Lyrics:

Hello Muddah, hello Faddah
Here I am at Camp Grenada
Camp is very entertaining
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining

I went hiking with Joe Spivey
He developed poison ivy
You remember Leonard Skinner
He got Ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner

All the counsellors hate the waiters
And the lake has alligators
And the head coach wants no sissies
So he reads to us from something called Ulysses

Now I don't want this should scare ya'
But my bunkmate has Malaria
You remember Jeffery Hardy
They're about to organize a searching party

Take me home, oh Muddah, Faddah
Take me home, I hate Grenada
Don't leave me out in the forest where
I might get eaten by a bear

Take me home, I promise I will
Not make noise, or mess the house with
Other boys, oh please don't make me stay
I've been here one whole day

Dearest Fadduh, Darling Muddah
How's my precious little bruddah
Let me come home if you miss me
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me

Wait a minute, it's stopped hailing
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing
Playing baseball, gee that's bettah
Muddah, Faddah kindly disregard this letter
