Career military man Alfred L. Hough served in both the volunteers as well as the U.S. Infantry during the Civil War. He recruited for the army in Terre Haute, Indiana, organizing and training a group of men known as the Union Rifles.

These local men, who included lawyers, bankers, mechanics, and doctors, were all trained by Hough to be officers in the Volunteers. Before Hough left Terre Haute, his men presented him this wonderful cased pair of Colt revolvers inscribed to their Captain. 160 years later they remain in phenomenal condition.
