Time of the Season (The Zombies, 1969). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-11-10. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Time of the Season," written by Rod Argent, was the Zombies' third top 10 hit and best selling single rising to no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969 (Whitburn, 2013). What is interesting is that the band had already disbanded by the time the single was released. It was Al Kooper (past member of Blood, Sweat & Tears) who was a staff producer in the A&R department at Columbia Records, who loved the record and persuaded Clive Davis to release it as a single (songfacts, 2023). Colin Blunstone, the band's lead singer, gave an interview to Songfacts and explained the recording of the song: "It was written in the morning before we went into the studio in the afternoon . . . Rod [Argent] and I had quite a heated discussion – he being in the control room and me singing the song - and we were just doing it through my headphones. Because it had only just been written, I was struggling with the melody. . . . It makes me laugh, because at the same time I'm singing, 'It's the time of the season for loving,' we're really going at one another" (songfacts, 2015).

Lyrics:

It's the time of the season
When the love runs high
In this time, give it to me easy
And let me try
With pleasured hands

To take you and the sun to
Promised lands
To show you every one
It's the time of the season for loving

What's your name?
Who's your daddy?
Is he rich like me?

Has he taken
Any time
To show you what you need to live?
Tell it to me slowly
Tell you what?
I really want to know
It's the time of the season for loving

What's your name?
Who's your daddy?
Is he rich like me?

Has he taken
Any time
To show you what you need to live?
Tell it to me slowly
Tell you what?
I really want to know
It's the time of the season for loving
