I'm completing the game on hard mode and showcasing Reinhardt's alternate costume, which is based on Simon Belmont's classic outfit. I only unlocked these features after I completed my prior playthrough, so that's why I'm just now showcasing them. I first tried Castlevania on the Nintendo 64 at Best Buy shortly after the game came out. Although it seemed interesting, I didn't give the game too much thought and instead focused on other games such as Ocarina of Time. However, because I started really getting into the Castlevania series around 2000, I decided to buy this game several months or perhaps a year after its release and give it a chance. I found that although the game starts off slow, it picks up speed and really becomes enjoyable about mid way through. The game has great atmosphere and some excellent boss fights. The Castle Center in particular is one of my favorite areas because of the music and the demon bull fight. That boss fight is just so memorable and awesome. The game definitely has flaws though. The controls are sluggish, the targeting system sucks, and the camera is horrendous. However, if you can get past those problems, it's a fun game. Luckily, the more complete version of this game (Legacy of Darkness) fixed a lot of these problems and included a bunch of new content. There's not much reason to play through this game instead of Legacy of Darkness, but there are some differences in the level designs, and small things like character costumes. Also, I purchased this game before Legacy, which meant that I ended up with both games. So I might as well upload the first title and show the differences from Legacy of Darkness. After beating the first Castlevania game on the N64 (around 2000 or so), I was so impressed that I decided to pick up Legacy of Darkness shortly afterward. Although I had read that this game was simply a more complete version of the first game and had recycled most of the same content, I didn't care. I wanted to see the new character, Cornell, and all of the changes the developers had made. I managed to find a copy of the game at a small electronics store (either Electronics Boutique or KB Toys) in a shopping mall about 30 minutes from my house. The store had one copy left and it was only $30. I purchased the game immediately and when I got home I played through most of the game that night. I was not disappointed. Legacy of Darkness managed to fix a lot of the flaws present in the first game, such as a piss-poor camera and sloppy controls. It also added a decent amount of new content while making small but noticeable changes to other portions of the game (such as having power-ups alter the look and sound of Reinhardt's whip much more). Some of the levels, such as Duel Tower and the Tower of Execution, had been vastly improved with new designs as well. I have played this game countless times and it never gets old for me. However, there is one noticeable flaw in this game. The high resolution mode, which makes use of the Expansion Pak, drops the frame rate down to unbearable levels. So the mode is essentially useless. Other than that though, I think it's a really good game. In this first part I completed the Foggy Lake area. This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness on the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. I'd like to upload playthroughs of this game using all four characters, so here's a remaining playthrough that I still needed to do with Carrie Fernandez. Since Carrie was in the first Castlevania for the Nintendo 64, this playthrough should show you all the changes and improvements that were made to her quest in Legacy of Darkness. After beating the first Castlevania game on the N64 (around 2000 or so), I was so impressed that I decided to pick up Legacy of Darkness shortly afterward. Although I had read that this game was simply a more complete version of the first game and had recycled most of the same content, I didn't care. I wanted to see the new character, Cornell, and all of the changes the developers had made. I managed to find a copy of the game at a small electronics store (either Electronics Boutique or KB Toys) in a shopping mall about 30 minutes from my house. The store had one copy left and it was only $30. I purchased the game immediately and when I got home I played through most of the game that night. I was not disappointed. Legacy of Darkness managed to fix a lot of the flaws present in the first game, such as a piss-poor camera and sloppy controls. It also added a decent amount of new content while making small but noticeable changes to other portions of the game (such as having power-ups alter the look and sound of Reinhardt's whip much more). Some of the levels, such as Duel Tower and the Tower of Execution, had been vastly improved with new designs as well. I have played this game countless times and it never gets old for me. However, there is one noticeable flaw in this game. The high resolution mode, which makes use of the Expansion Pak, drops the frame rate down to unbearable levels. So the mode is essentially useless. Other than that though, I think it's a really good game. I typically don't play through this game using Carrie because I prefer Cornell and Reinhardt, but the improvements in Legacy of Darkness helped make Carrie's quest more enjoyable than the prior game. This is a capture of the optional high resolution mode in Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness on the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Legacy of Darkness cartridge. I decided to upload a separate video showing off the infamous high resolution mode that's available in this game. If you have an Expansion Pak, you can set this game to display at an optional "high resolution" of 640x480 (interlaced) instead of the standard low resolution of 320x240 (progressive). All of my playthroughs were done using the low resolution mode, so this video offers a look at the other setting. One of the neat things about the Nintendo 64 was that it offered a so-called high resolution of 640x480 for several games. This mode typically required use of the separate Expansion Pak which upgraded the system's RAM to 8mb total. However, one game, World Driver Championship, offered a letterbox high resolution mode without the Expansion Pak. In Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, the high resolution mode certainly makes the graphics look much nicer, but it comes at a substantial cost: it absolutely devastates the game's frame rate. Most Nintendo 64 games run a frame rate between 20-30 fps, on average. That's already pretty low when compared to the earlier 8-bit and 16-bit standard of 60 fps (for 2D games). But when the high resolution mode is enabled in this game, it drops the frame rate to something like 10 fps, from what I can tell. This mode has rightfully been called "unplayable," and this video shows why. I decided to use this mode with a graphically intense level. In this case, I picked the Tower of Execution because of the flowing lava and the swinging pendulums. As you can see, the frame rate is pretty bad, but once you get to the section with the dropping boulders, it becomes downright ridiculous and nearly unplayable - in the literal sense. I haven't played every high resolution game available on the Nintendo 64, but even so, I can safely say that Legacy of Darkness probably holds the record for absolute worst high resolution mode due to its terrible frame rate. When I first picked this game up back around 2001, I enabled the mode to see what it would be like. Within less than a minute of playing the game I realized how terrible the mode was, and I immediately switched back to the low resolution setting. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Spider-Man cartridge. I’m playing on hard difficulty. Although I didn’t read comic books, I was a huge fan of the Spider-Man cartoon that aired on Fox in the mid ’90s, and I enjoyed the Spider-Man films from Sam Raimi. As a result, in 2002 I bought Spider-Man for the GameCube on a whim, and I ended up enjoying the game so much that I beat it multiple times on different difficulty levels. I later bought Spider-Man 2 for the GameCube and beat it multiple times as well. Oddly though, for quite a while, I didn’t buy or even play the predecessor to those games: Spider-Man for the N64/PlayStation. Even though I had considered picking up the N64 version shortly after it came out (it made the cover of Nintendo Power magazine), I never got around to buying the game until 2015, when I finally purchased a sealed copy off eBay for a reasonable price. Despite owning this game for several years, I’m just now getting around to playing it for the first time because of how busy I’ve been with all of my other playthroughs. But it is nice to finally play this game after all these years. This game actually got a sequel on the PlayStation, but sadly, it was never ported to the Nintendo 64. This game supports the Expansion Pak, which I’m using, but I couldn’t find any specific information explaining how the game utilizes the extra system RAM, so I ran some comparisons with and without the Expansion Pak. I noticed that the Expansion made the game look a little sharper overall (fewer jagged edges), but scan lines were still present. Also, I noticed that the menu screens always displayed at a higher resolution of 480i, regardless of the Expansion Pak, similar to Vigilante 8. Aside from the Expansion Pak support, one of the key differences between the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 versions of Spider-Man is that the N64 version has comic-book-style slideshows in between missions instead of full video cutscenes. This is obviously a result of cartridge space limitations. Some voice acting is still present though. Since the game isn’t that tough, I’ll be completing it on hard difficulty. Also, there are hidden comic books to collect on some levels, and those unlock certain features, so I will be collecting those as well. The game is divided into 6 chapters spanning 34 levels. Since the levels are generally short, I’ll be uploading multiple levels in each video. In this first part I completed Chapter 1: The Bank Heist. This is not an emulator. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Off Road Challenge cartridge. I'm playing on normal difficulty using a manual transmission. A couple years ago I picked up a brand new steering wheel for my Nintendo 64 (Interact's V3 Racing Wheel). I had seen the wheel in stores back in the day, but I never got to use one until 2013. Since I had picked up Off Road Challenge around the same time, I put the wheel to good use by playing through the entire game with it. It was a lot of fun, and I later completed Hydro Thunder as well using the wheel. I've played several Off Road Challenge arcade machines ever since they were released in the late '90s. In fact, there are still a few machines around my area. I recall renting the N64 version some time after it came out, but I never bothered to pick up my own copy. I was probably satisfied with Top Gear Rally and World Driver Championship (not to mention Wave Race 64 and Mario Kart 64), which were deeper racing games. Interestingly, I had a neighbor in the late '90s who hadn't owned a video game console since the NES era (he was probably around 40 years old). He told me he liked the Off Road Challenge arcade machine, and I mentioned that the game was available on the Nintendo 64. Well, soon after, he actually went out and bought a Nintendo 64 just to play that game. However, one thing that bothered him was that his controller didn't shake whereas the steering wheel on the arcade machine shook whenever you crashed into stuff. So I let him borrow my Rumble Pak to get more of an arcade experience and he thought that was cool. Off Road Challenge itself is good, mindless fun, and it's cheap enough to acquire. Playing this game with the V3 is a ton of fun and really gives you an arcade experience at home. The steering wheel itself works really well and is even completely customizable. I was able to reassign buttons and manually adjust the sensitivity of the steering too (you're not stuck with preset sensitivities). The Nintendo 64 port of this game is fairly similar to the arcade version, but I've noticed a couple of differences. First, the arcade game seems to run at 60 fps, whereas this version does not. Second, the arcade version allows you run over animals (such as cattle) and spray them all over the road, which is hilarious. The Nintendo 64 version is sadly missing that feature. Aside from those issues though, this is a pretty good console port. In this video I completed the first circuit, the Rookie Circuit, using the Toyota Trophy Truck. I love Toyota Trucks (I own one), and I especially like Ivan Stewart's old trophy truck, so I had to use that one. Not all of these races were completed back-to-back in a single session. Here's some footage of the two-player mode in this game. Like a bunch of other racing games on the Nintendo 64, Off Road Challenge doesn't allow two people to race against AI cars. Instead, you can only race against each other, which is really limiting. It would be a lot more fun if two people could complete the different circuits together, similar to SNES racing games like the Top Gear series. Drew and I completed three courses using the Toyota Trophy Truck and Class 10 Heavy-Metal. I hadn't played this game in a couple years and Drew has possibly never played this game before, so we didn't race all that well. Also, I couldn't figure out which button allowed me to downshift (I used a steering wheel for my prior playthrough), so I had to leave the truck in fourth gear every time I crashed. I felt like recording some newer, higher-quality Hydro Thunder footage since the old footage was grainy and too dark. I also felt like using my steering wheel accessory that I previously used for my Off Road Challenge playthrough. The steering wheel ended up working really well for this game and I even beat some of my old times with it. Hydro Thunder is the last great arcade game that I can recall playing before arcades pretty much died. I dumped a lot of quarters into this game and then spent plenty of time playing the various console ports. The Dreamcast port was the best (I played it once or twice), but the other ports weren't bad at all. I think one of my friends owned the Nintendo 64 version when I was in high school, so I played through it a bunch around 2000/2001. I may have rented it as well. For some reason the boats move a little slower in the Nintendo 64 version, but it has pretty good graphics overall. There's even a unique four-player mode, but it sucks terribly because you're stuck in a first-person view and the frame rate drops to horrendous levels. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Top Gear Rally cartridge. I'm using a manual transmission, like always. Since I already completed World Driver Championship, I figured I should upload another game from the same developer: Top Gear Rally. Top Gear Rally was a continuation of the Top Gear series from the SNES (I played the first two games back during the SNES days), but instead of street racing, this title focused on off road rally racing. I first saw previews of this game in Nintendo Power, and I decided I should get it since I liked off road racing and since I enjoyed playing the original Top Gear with my uncle. I had hoped that the both of us would be able to complete the Championship mode together like you could do in the SNES games, but sadly, this wasn't the case. Because of hardware limitations, only one player could play through the championship. The two-player mode was just a vs. mode with no AI racers. So we never got to play through the game together. Also, the controls in this game were extremely difficult, so my uncle didn't really enjoy playing it. I don't blame him. This is the most difficult-to-control racing game I've ever played. Top Gear Rally was the only Nintendo 64 game I received for Christmas of 1997, and I didn't receive any more Nintendo 64 games until Christmas of 1998, so I had a full year with just one new console game. Needless to say, I made the most of it and played the crap out of this game. Overall, Top Gear Rally was fun, but in a way, it was also disappointing because the controls sucked, there were only four main tracks (plus one bonus track), and the Championship mode no longer supported two players. But the game seems to have a decent following, so hopefully people will enjoy this playthrough. On a related note, I recently spoke to Tobias Reich (http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/) and he gave me a better method for deinterlacing my retro console captures. I was previously using the built-in deinterlacing filter in Sony Vegas, but that was blurring my footage, so I was having to sharpen the videos quite a bit to counteract that. However, that was apparently causing a slight quality loss. Tobias showed me how to deinterlace my footage in Virtualdub without affecting the quality, so I no longer need to sharpen my footage. My retro captures should technically be higher quality from now on. Oh, and Tobias confirmed something I had suspected before, which is that Youtube compresses 720p videos at a higher bitrate, regardless of the source resolution. I suspected this was the case back when I uploaded my Metroid Prime playthrough. With my new deinterlacing method, I can now render in 720p without any quality loss (Sony Vegas was previously causing 240p captures to become blurrier if I rendered in 720p instead of 480p, probably because of the internal deinterlace filter). So I'll be uploading all my footage in 720p from now on to prevent Youtube from killing the quality. This is a capture of me racing on the hidden Strip Mine course in Top Gear Rally for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. There are only four available courses in Championship mode of this game, but there's a hidden fifth course (Strip Mine) that can be unlocked by completing certain requirements in the Championship mode or by simply entering a cheat code. Unfortunately, you can't access the Strip Mine in the Championship mode, but you can race against a single AI racer in the Arcade mode, which is what I did here using the PS (the Porsche). Sunny weather conditions aren't available on this course for some reason, so I selected foggy conditions and showed off the various paths you can take. The music for this course is actually based on the music from the first Top Gear game for the SNES. This is part 1 of my playthrough of World Driver Championship on the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual World Driver Championship cartridge. I'm using a manual transmission, like always. Back during the Nintendo 64 era I had a real fondness for racing games since the genre was fairly well represented on the system. However, a large portion of the N64 racing library was made up of arcade racers, and while they were great for pick-up-and-play action, they sometimes lacked depth. So while I enjoyed various arcade racing games, I also kept my eyes out for more realistic or simulation-based titles. I had received Top Gear Rally back in 1997, which wasn't exactly an arcade racer. Although I certainly enjoyed the game, it was lacking in content and had overly sensitive controls. A couple of years later I noticed that the developer behind Top Gear Rally, Boss Game Studios, had released a game that was being dubbed the Gran Turismo of the Nintendo 64. The game was titled World Driver Championship. I must have read IGN's review of World Driver Championship a dozen times before I finally purchased the game in late 1999 or early 2000. By then it was only $30 at my local EB Games, so I picked up the game complete in box. When I got home and tried the game, I was not disappointed. The controls still weren't perfect, but there was way more content than Top Gear Rally, good music, and unbelievable graphics. Boss Game Studios was probably one of the most technically proficient N64 developers, and they really showed it with this game. World Driver Championship remains a stunning achievement in N64 graphics. In fact, all of the menu screens automatically display at a high resolution, and the races themselves are available in an optional letterbox high-resolution format - all without the game utilizing the Expansion Pak. Since this game was so difficult, I couldn't get any of my friends to play it (we would instead resort to Mario Kart or an arcade racer). But I still played the hell out of it by myself. Before World Driver Championship, I used to play racing games simply by flying around courses at top speed without slowing down. This game, however, forced me to change tactics and learn to use controlled braking and downshifting in order to handle the turns. It was challenging, but also a lot of fun. I would get sucked into each course and just find that perfect rhythm where I got faster with each lap. If you've seen my prior videos on this game then you already know what to expect. It's time to beat this game like a red-headed stepchild. In this first part I created a new profile and completed the Novice Cup in the GT2 circuit. This is a capture of me unlocking the hidden Falcon Interceptor in World Driver Championship for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual World Driver Championship cartridge. The Falcon Interceptor, along with the Excalibur Mystic, is the fastest car in World Driver Championship. However, unlike the Mystic, the Falcon Interceptor is hidden and has to be unlocked. To unlock it, you have to earn a gold cup in each event in the Championship. After that, you can select the Novice Cup in GT2 mode, except this time you'll race solely against the Falcon Interceptor. The cup only contains two tracks with two laps each, so it's really easy. If you win, you'll unlock the Interceptor, which will be available through Boss Racing. The Interceptor is really easy to beat with the Excalibur Mystic, which you've probably already unlocked by this point. In this video I beat the Interceptor and then took the car for a test drive. It has the same stats as the Mystic, but to me, it feels like it handles slightly different. It also seems to have a smaller frame. There's nothing too special about the Interceptor since it shares stats with the Mystic, but it gives you something to do later in the game. This is a capture of me racing against the Excalibur Mystic time attack ghost in World Driver Championship for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual World Driver Championship cartridge. The developer of this game, Boss Game Studios, included several ghosts in the Time Attack section of the game, and one of these ghosts is the Excalibur Mystic on the Les Gets track. The Mystic, along with the hidden Falcon Interceptor, is the fastest car in the game. To unlock the car, you have to achieve an overall ranking of first in the GT circuits. This means beating the game completely, and then some. I don't know if this ghost was a capture of Boss's absolute best time on this track, but it's fairly fast, although by no means the fastest time humanly possible. This video shows you how to beat the ghost soundly. To do this, you'll need the Excalibur Mystic or the Falcon Interceptor and some smarter driving techniques. The key to beating Boss's ghost is to not brake through the snow tunnel at the bottom of the first long straightaway, unlike Boss. To make it through the tunnel without braking, you'll need to turn hard left initially without counter-steering to the right. It may take a little practice, but once you get the feeling for it, you'll be able to make the turn at full speed nearly every time. Aside from that, just drive your best and don't hit a wall or spin out. I'm using a manual transmission here because manual transmissions rock, plus it gives me more control and helps me to prevent the car from spinning out. This is a capture of the high resolution mode in World Driver Championship on the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual World Driver Championship cartridge. One of the neat things about the Nintendo 64 was that it offered a so-called high resolution of 640x480 for several games. This mode typically required use of the separate Expansion Pak which upgraded the system's RAM to 8mb total. However, one game, World Driver Championship, offered a letterbox high resolution mode without using the Expansion Pak. The game was simply programmed that well (it has some of the best graphics on the system). In order to activate the high resolution mode, you simply have to pause the game during a race and select "HI-RES." Surprisingly, all of the menu screens automatically display at a high resolution, regardless of whether the menu is displaying in full screen or a letterbox format (no scan lines are present in either situation). The 240p mode is only used during the actual races, unless you disable it by switching to high resolution. Overall, the high resolution mode is playable, but just barely. It drops the frame rate down a little too low for my liking, and considering how difficult this game already is, I prefer to just stick to the full screen mode for the higher frame rate. This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through the Quest mode in Vigilante 8 on the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Vigilante 8 cartridge. I'm playing on Unleaded difficulty. I've been a huge fan of vehicular combat games ever since I first played Super Mario Kart back around 1992 or so. Some time before the Nintendo 64 came out, I visited one of my father's friends, and that friend had a son who owned a PlayStation. This guy happened to be playing Twisted Metal, which I knew nothing about. When I asked if I could join him, he let me, and we did several one-on-one matches with me basically getting my ass kicked. Despite this fact, I had a ton of fun and kept bugging this guy to let me play Twisted Metal to the point that he had to start saying no. I later obtained a Nintendo 64 for Christmas of 1996, and a couple years after that, Vigilante 8 came out for the system. I'm not sure if I heard about Vigilante 8 through Nintendo Power or if I rented it or what, but somehow, I found out about the game and decided to get it due to its similarities to Twisted Metal. So somewhere around 1999 I managed to buy a brand new copy of Vigilante 8 for about $30 or so (it was discounted by then) and proceeded to play the hell out of the game. Vigilante 8 has been one of my go-to multiplayer games for nearly two decades now. I used to play this game all the time with friends, whether it was in two, three or four-player mode. Even to this day, I still play the game on occasion with my friend Drew. I love being able to play against AI opponents (something that wasn't available in other games such as GoldenEye) since you don't have to rely on having other people around. The multiplayer mode in this game is really the shining star, but Vigilante 8 also has a Quest mode that allows you complete specific missions with each character. The missions themselves are nothing special. It's basically just involves preventing the AI from destroying certain buildings or objects. The AI will generally just focus on you, and not its mission objectives, so if you stay away from the buildings and whatnot you shouldn't have much trouble passing the missions. Even though the Quest mode isn't all that great, it's a nice little addition to this game, and nothing I can really complaint about. I used to play this game all the time in high school. I'd get some friends over and we'd have a blast (literally). This game has great multiplayer, especially for two people. I miss vehicular combat games. I've liked them ever since I first played Twisted Metal around 1995 or 1996. I like to grab a friend and jump into Cooperative mode in this game, which allows you to fight up to nine cars in a team match. You can't do this with more than two people though because the system simply can't handle AI cars while splitting the screen more than two ways. So if you're playing with three or four people, you'll simply have to battle each other. We entered in two cheat codes before we started. One was FIRE_NO_LIMITS. This allows you fire special weapons as fast as you can press the R button (there's normally a cooldown in between shots, which sucks). The second code was MIX_MATCH_CARS. This allows multiple players to use the same vehicle. Since Drew and I both like to use John Torque, we always enter this code. What's nice about this game is that it supports the Expansion Pak and it allows you to split the screen either horizontally or vertically. Since I have an Expansion Pak, I always enable high resolution mode. There's also a cheat for an ultra resolution mode, but it drops the framerate way too low. In this video Drew and I battled nine school buses on the Ski Resort map and bass quaked them into oblivion using John Torque (because Bass Quake is awesome. This is a capture of the hidden ultra resolution mode in Vigilante 8 on the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Vigilante 8 cartridge. I've already uploaded several multiplayer videos of Vigilante 8 showing off the high resolution mode that can be enabled through use of the Expansion Pak. However, there is also a hidden "ultra" resolution setting that can be activated by entering MAX_RESOLUTION on the password screen. This video shows that hidden setting. One of the neat things about the Nintendo 64 was that it offered a so-called high resolution of 640x480 for several games. This mode typically required use of the separate Expansion Pak which upgraded the system's RAM to 8mb total. However, one game, World Driver Championship, offered a letterbox high resolution mode without the Expansion Pak. Vigilante 8 has one of the best high resolution modes I've seen in a Nintendo 64 game. It runs incredibly smooth for a 640x480i resolution, even in split screen multiplayer. As a result, I always enable the standard "high" mode when playing this game. Also, interestingly enough, the menu screens in this game automatically run at 480i by default (there are no scan lines present), but the game quickly switches to 240p mode during the animation where the screen image flies away from you. The next menu screen then reverts to 480i again. For some reason, the developer included a hidden "ultra" resolution setting that you can activate with a password. Although neither the Nintendo 64 nor a standard CRT TV can exceed a 480 resolution, I suspect that this mode simply increases texture detail while using the same 480i mode. This is probably similar to Shin'en stating that FAST Racing Neo has 4K textures even though the game itself displays at a native 720p resolution. I typically don't use the ultra resolution mode because it drops the frame rate too low without much of a graphical improvement. However, it is a neat feature.
