Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is often referred to as the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks. He played a central role in the planning, coordination, and execution of the attacks, which resulted in the hijacking of four commercial airliners and the destruction of the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the attack on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. After the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed went into hiding but was eventually captured in Pakistan in 2003. He was subsequently held at Guantanamo Bay, a U.S. detention facility, and was subjected to various forms of interrogation, including controversial techniques like waterboarding.
