Here we are at phases 3 of dealing with off leash dogs! It may just so happen that you couldn’t deter the other dog or it was simply tooo late when you realized. If that is the case, simply drop your dogs leash and supervise the interaction. The walk has to transition into more of a social session, so no leash tension, no talking or treats. Keep a close eye on the interaction until the other dog’s owner arrives to gain control of their dog. Obviously this methods isn’t entirely full proof, and there is still a potential that a dog may attack your dog. However, by treating it more like a social encounter the dogs will be able to interact more naturally which should reduce some of the likelihood that that occurs. Off leash dogs are unfortunately a reality and obstacle many dog owners have to address. By following the 3 ways we recommend, you will have a much better chance at staying safe with your dog.
