Bell UH-1 Iroquois: The MIGHTY HUEY!

The UH1 Huey helicopter is easily one of the most recognisable MILITARY HELICOPTERS in the world. First flown in 1956, the UH-1 Huey was designed as a military utility helicopter and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) helicopter following the success of MASH units during the Korean War. Despite being operated by the militaries of dozens of countries, including: the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), Japanese Self-Defence Forces and the US Army, US Navy, US Marines and US Air Force, the UH1 Iroquois is perhaps most famous for its role in the Vietnam War. As part of the AIRMOBILE concept, thousands of Hueys saw active service in Vietnam, but of all the units equipped with this helicopter none captured the public’s imagination more than those of the Air Cavalry (AIR CAV), most notably in the movie: Apocalypse Now. For today’s AVIATION ART RELEASE we went back in time to capture a flight of 1st Air Cavalry Division UH-1 Hueys sweeping across the jungle sunset. Enjoy!
