Perseverance is a car-sized robotic rover that is part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission. Launched on July 30, 2020, it landed successfully on Mars on February 18, 2021. Its primary mission is to search for signs of past life and collect rock and soil samples for potential return to Earth. It is also tasked with characterizing the planet's climate and geology, demonstrating technology for future robotic and human exploration, and paving the way for future human missions to Mars.

Perseverance carries seven different scientific instruments, including cameras, spectrometers, and a drill to gather core samples of Martian rock and soil. One of its key instruments, called MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment), is designed to demonstrate the production of oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, potentially paving the way for future human exploration by producing oxygen for rocket fuel and for breathing.
