Sunday Longplay Challenge - Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (NES) - Reverse Mansion Order, M. Star 1st

This week on a special Challenge edition of Sunday Longplay, Halloween is coming soon, so let's get into the spirit with a Castlevania challenge! I've played Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest on my channel many years ago, and I've played a ROM Hack called "The Three Mothers" more recently, but now let's do a self-imposed challenge for the game!Show more

This challenge is a combination of two different challenges from a RetroAchievements subset. The goal of this challenge is to get the Morning Star as your very first item, and then get Dracula's body parts in reverse order (Ring, Nail, Heart, Eyeball, Rib). Really, the hardest part of this challenge was getting across the river at the beginning. Once across there is a pair of lizardmen that you can easily and safely grind to get the hearts needed to buy the Morning Star. In theory I could have grinded them all the way to Level 5, but I didn't want to make it too easy on myself, so I stopped when I got the 200 hearts.

Once the Morning Star is in hand, you can start killing the annoying blobs on your way back to the town of Jova, and then you can get your white crystal and your holy water, and then go all the way east to Aljiba to get the blue crystal, and then go back across the river to the west to the town of Alba to get the red crystal, then take the tornado west of Ondol (where you got the Morning Star).

Make sure you stock up on Laurels before taking the tornado, because you'll then cross a long marsh to Laruba Mansion as your first destination. Talk to the laurel merchant there to restock before you leave after getting Dracula's Ring, because you'll need to re-cross the marsh to go back to Bodley Mansion for Dracula's Nail, and then cross it again back to Laruba. Go back inside and restock on Laurels, because you'll need to cross another marsh to the west to get back to Aljiba.

Because we need Dracula's Heart in order to get to Brahm's Mansion where Dracula's Eyeball is, go down the stairs outside of Aljiba to Rover Mansion, get Dracula's Heart, then equip it when talking to the ferryman west of Jova to get to Brahm's Mansion to get Dracula's Eyeball. After that, go back across the river and go east to Berkeley Mansion for Dracula's Rib.

After going through the whole game to this point without your handy shield, it's time to resurrect the Count and kill him once again! Cross the river one last time (don't equip Dracula's Heart), head west to Deborah Cliff, ride the tornado, then go east of Bodley Mansion and follow the path until you reach a staircase. Take it down to the abandoned town of Ghulash and continue east to the ruins of Castlevania. Go down the stairs and kill Dracula once more to cure the curse!
