Teacher and student brawl over Palestinian flag

A confrontation between a student and teacher turned to blows after an argument erupted over a Palestinian flag. The incident at Berlin's Ernst-Abbe school, which has a substantial Palestinian cohort, led to violence when a student refused a teacher’s request to put away a Palestinian flag after removing it from his backpack. The altercation, captured on video and widely shared on social media, saw the teacher slapping the student and the student responding with a kick to the stomach, although the inept camerawork leaves much of the fight obscured.

According to police statements, the teacher alleges that the fight started when the student headbutted him, and the slap was self-defense, although this alleged incident was not visible in the video. The student’s family have rejected the teacher’s claim that this was self-defense. The incident is under investigation for claims of mutual bodily harm, with the German security agency responsible for politically motivated crimes also looking into the matter.
