Reminiscent of 1982, the Tar Heels were coming off a crushing defeat in the national title game just a year earlier. In the 2016 National Championship game, Carolina led at the half only to let it slip away over the course of the final 19+ minutes, but with just seconds to play a double-clutch three-pointer from Marcus Paige tied the game. That's when Villanova did the unthinkable and sunk a half-court buzzer-beater to defeat the Heels. Just twelve months later, a somewhat different Tar Heel team now missing Marcus Paige, Bryce Johnson, and Joel James had stormed all the way back to a second consecutive Final Four. After squeaking out a victory against Oregon in the national semi-final game, North Carolina took on media darling Gonzaga. The Heels would ultimately prevail in a game for which the officials seemed to want to make it about them and blew an extraordinary number of whistles.
