In this video, we’re going to talk about how chronic stress affects the brain.

Chronic stress can raise your cortisol to levels that can begin to destroy parts of your brain. In particular, it can destroy the hippocampus.

Hippocampus comes from the word seahorse. This is because it has a shape similar to a seahorse.

Your hippocampus plays a role in short-term memory and locating yourself in time and space (like your built-in GPS). Not being able to remember where you parked your car is a sign of hippocampus damage or atrophy.

Chronic cortisol will shut off the oxygen to your hippocampus. Additionally, high levels of insulin and low levels of vitamin B1 can cause lower oxygen and atrophy to the hippocampus.
