A young woman arrives in Hollywood with dreams of stardom, and realizes them only with the help of an alcoholic actor whose best days are behind her.

The story is very similar to the previous What Price Hollywood? (1932), released by RKO Radio Pictures. The original name of the 1932 film was "The Truth About Hollywood", from a story by Adela Rogers St. Johns. St. Johns loosely based his text on the experiences of actress Colleen Moore and her husband, alcoholic producer John McCormick (1893–1961), and the life and death of director Tom Forman, who committed suicide after a nervous breakdown.

Four years after What Price Hollywood? was released, producer Selznick went to director George Cukor and asked if he would like to direct A Star Is Born. Cukor thought the script was too similar to What Price Hollywood? and didn't accept it. RKO executives considered suing Selznick International Pictures for plagiarism but decided against it. Cukor later directed the remake as a musical in 1954, starring Judy Garland.

A common myth in Hollywood was that Lana Turner appeared as an extra in one of the scenes. Turner denied this rumor for years, saying that she was discovered months after that production ended. (source: https://pt.wikipedia.org/)

Film nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Story (Won), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Assistant Director, Honorary Academy Award (Won).

It won the 9th National Board of Review Award for Top Ten Films of 1937.

Nominated at the Venice International Film Festival for Best Foreign Film.
