If you live in one of those regions, you'll know that the decaying plant matter has a particular smell that fills the air everywhere and sends a signal to our noses that fall is here. Well, many plants contain a substance known as lignin, which is like the plant version of bone and it's what makes wood hard. It's very hard for anything to break it down and in fact for millions of years nothing could. So why does wood decay? Let me explain why!
