Your brain's number one job is not to make you happy, but to keep you safe from danger.

To do this, your brain is always looking for possible signs of danger, and when it senses it -- whether it's real or perceived -- it can react in ways that cause you stress and anxiety.

Here are three tendencies your brain has developed in its efforts to protect you from danger:

1. Your Brain Has a Negativity Bias:
Your brain is always looking for what is wrong, what could go wrong -- and in general it is much more sensitive to anything that is negative than anything positive. In a way, your brain is only showing you a limited view of life, over-focusing on the negative.

2. Your Brain Hates Uncertainty:
To give itself a sense of control during uncertainty, it starts to make up stories, and because of the negativity bias, those stories end up being much more dramatic and negative.

3. Your Brain Loves to Default to its Familiar Thought Patterns:
You don't see things in your life as they are, but as you believe they are. In order to use less energy, your brain defaults to familiar thought patterns, which don't always accurately reflect the present moment.

In this video, I share a few science-backed tips to help you shift your thoughts so you can better manage your stress and anxiety -- I hope you find them helpful!
