I Am A Rock (Simon & Garfunkel, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's Bar & Grill, Kahala, HI. 2023-0-26. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"I Am A Rock," written by Paul Simon, was the Simon & Garfunkel's third top 10 hit rising to no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). Simon had written the song a few years earlier and offered the song to Chad and Jeremy to record, but they turned it down (songfests, 2023). The original recording of the song was by Paul Simon himself and released as a single in the UK, but it did not fly. After the success of "The Sound of Silence," Simon & Garfunkel headed back into the studio with session musicians, which according to guitarist, included himself (12 string guitar), Al Kooper (organ) and Bobby Gregg (drums) (no mention of who played bass) (songfacts, 2023). However, James Bennighof, in his biography of Simon, claimed the session musicians were Hal Blaine (drums), Carol Kaye (bass guitar), Larry Knechtel (organ) and Joe South (guitar) (2007).

Lyrics:

A winter's day
In a deep and dark
December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
I am a rock
I am an island

I've built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain
I am a rock
I am an island

Don't talk of love
But I've heard the words before
It's sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock
I am an island

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock
I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries
