This is a good exercise to try and keep track of the front sight and the target. It is especially difficult with iron sights. With the Red Dot it is a lot easier because you're looking at a single thing. The target with the DOT imposed upon it.

The purpose of the drill is not so much to make you a great one-handed shooter, so much as to get you to shoot under stress. Moving and shooting get you out of your comfort zone.
