"Baby I Need Your Loving," written by Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland, was the Four Tops' first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 landing at the no. 11 position in 1964 (Whitburn, 2013). Other artists who hit the Billboard chart with their version of the song include Johnny Rivers (no. 3, 1967), O. C. Smilth (no. 52, 1970) and Eric Carmen (no. 62, 1979). "The Four Tops were around for 11 years before they broke through with this song. It was their first single for Motown Records" (songfacts, 2023). Songfacts' writer, Carl Wiser, interviewed co-writer Lamont Dozier; he said that the songs they wrote started out as ballads to find an emotional feel with chords. "Then when we got in the studio, we would pick up the tempo. Because at the time, dance music was in with the kids, so we tried to make them commercial by picking up the speed. That's what made the songs commercial" (Jun. 18, 2023).
