UK Fracking is over, but there’s a Grant Shapps shaped catch…

Fracking company Cuadrilla has been given it's final marching orders, but with Grant Shapps involved is there more to it?
Right, so who’s for a good news story then? Despite all these oil and gas licences being granted by Rishi Sunak in the North Sea, the one thing the people of Lancashire, or any of us actually, won’t have to look forward to anymore are flames coming from their water taps, the water tables being poisoned and earthquakes rattling theirs and the neighbours windows because fracking is officially over! Hurrah! The only two shale gas wells in the country are being shut down for good. Now aside from being a Jacob Rees Mogg wet dream fantasy, that he brings up on a semi regular basis, fracking has been beset with problems for all the aforementioned reasons and significant weight has been leant to the argument to pack it in, when other countries have banned it completely for the obvious damaging reasons it causes, destroying environments, drinking water resources and destablilising the ground. However there might be a Grant Shapps shaped sting in the tail here, the reason this has finally been done, which I’ll come onto in a moment. First the good news though. Lancashire is home to the original fracking project, when drill company Cuadrilla showed up in Fylde just outside Blackpool in 2011 an did some test drilling at a place called Preece Hall. That triggered two minor earthquakes in Blackpool, so they packed that in and went elsewhere, coming along to Preston New Road in Fylde in 2014. David Cameron loved the idea of all of this lovely fracking and Cuadrilla duly got on with causing chaos, with significant protests, we remember people being arrested, including local politicians even, the leader of the Green Party group on Lancashire County Council Gina Dowding for example, was one of those cuffed and taken away, convicted of obstruction along with a dozen others back in 2017 for opposing it, when was the last time you saw a politician from one of the main parties get arrested then? Corbyn when he got done for opposing apartheid in that famous photo maybe? Anyway, I’ve digressed. There was hell up for years, opposition and activism against the drilling for years until finally in August 2019, a moratorium was passed after increasingly significant earth tremors were being identified and directly linked to hydraulic fracturing of the shale rock in order to release natural gas locked up within it. The last one measured 2.9 on the Richter Scale, enough to be noticeably felt. That was it for the Oil and Gas Authority, they shut her down on the basis they earth tremors couldn’t be predicted and it was just too risky to continue. By November, the then Johnson led government – surprising for him – shut down down all further exploration too.
