Sunday Longplay - Castlevania 2: The Three Mothers (NES ROM Hack)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I've played a few different hacks for Castlevania 1 and 3, but now I'm going to cover my first ROM hack for the black sheep of the NES trilogy! Welcome to the first Castlevania 2 ROM hack I'm covering on this channel, The Three Mothers!

This hack is based on The Three Mothers trilogy by Dario Argento, especially on the lore from the last movie, where it is summarized:

“More than a thousand years ago, witchcraft was birthed by the shores of the Black Sea by three sisters. For years they roamed the earth bringing death and destruction wherever they went.”

Everything from the original C2 was changed: levels, sprites, bosses, texts, some few sound effects and all endings! Overall, it was made intending to be far more of a challenge than C2, exploring it’s hidden potentials.

It is already patched with Improved Controls, False Floor & Breakable Block Replacer, Simon Restore & Improved lifebar and SRAM hack. The cool sword sprites comes from Vengeance on Hell, and one of the bosses was based on a sprite from Quest for Sarah. Others sprites were adapted from Castlevania 3, while others are original (including the little Baphomet!).

The above mentioned patches fix many of the annoyances in the OG Castlevania 2, including the cryptic townspeople and the day-night transitions, as well as making pitfalls and breakable blocks more visible. Some of the annoyances are still there, like the early-game grinding, but the game is still much more manageable now.
