Jack Knife Accident Totals Large Cargo Truck, SWARTWOUT, August 10, 2023 - At approximately 4:45 pm on August 10, 2023, the driver of a large cargo truck (pulling a backhoe with a 5th wheel trailer) was south-bound on FM-1988 South. According to the driver of the truck, a SUV pulled off of Barnett lane directly in front of him. The truck driver swerved left and pressed his brakes. The truck driver says his brakes locked up. His truck left the pavement to the left, brushed against a tree and came to rest on private property. The alleged SUV continued and drove away. Allegiance Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with Troopers Kevin Burman and Cotye Lowrie with the Texas Highway Patrol. Fortunately the truck driver wasn't injured. The cargo truck appeared to be totaled and its front end was completely torn off. East Texas Towing out of Shepherd was summoned to clean up the mess (owner's request). This accident remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol.
