Will you give it all (The hidden treasure Matthew 13:44-46)
Have you ever had something that was worth giving everything you had up to pursue it? I am amazed with treasure hunters who are willing to risk it all to try and find a treasure that may or may not be where they think it is. They find an old map or hear old story of where a treasure is supposed to be, and they throw all their resources at the possibility of hitting it big by finding the treasure. They will spend every dime they have, alienate everyone they know and love because of their obsession, and risk their very life because they believe it will all be worth it if they can find this treasure. Jesus uses this kind of obsessed, not going rest until I have its mentality to describe how we should all feel about the Kingdom of Heaven. He tells of an individual who finds a great treasure on someone else’s land and instead of stealing the treasure he leaves it hidden and goes and sales everything he owns so he can go buy the field and the treasure on it from its owner. Then he tells of a merchant who deals in fine pearls who finds a rare and beautiful pearl that he loves so much that he must have it, even if it means giving up everything else in his collection to get it. This merchant sold everything that he had to make sure he did not miss out on the pearl of his dreams. Two stories with two individuals who was willing to give it all up to get what they wanted.
Jesus’s stories were about two individuals seeking a physical treasure, but he was really talking about and eternal spiritual treasure. You cannot place a value on the kind of treasure that Jesus is speaking of eternal life in paradise in the presence of God is priceless. If people are willing to go to such great measures to acquire a treasure that will fade away or erode, shouldn’t they go to even greater extremes for an eternal treasure. People are willing to spend their time, money and effort pursuing things that they think will give them joy and happiness in this temporary life but neglect to focus their effort on the eternal treasure of heaven. The fact is that we are all created to live for eternity so we should be pursuing things in our life that will be of eternal value. We must be like the individuals in the stories and value the treasure of heaven more than anything else that we have in this life. We must be willing to forsake anything in our lives that stands in the way of us acquiring the treasure of heaven. Money, jobs, relationships, habits, etc. that keep us from loving the Lord with all our heart, mind, and soul must go. We must have the mindset that nothing is going to keep us from the eternal treasure of heaven.
