In this episode of the Wild Wisdom Show, I am discussing the very controversial topic of Health Canada’s announcement of proposed fees for natural health products sold in Canada.

👀There has been a significant amount of concern raised on how this will impact:
1) the price and availability of natural health products, like supplements, for consumers,
2) the future of small and medium businesses who might not be able to afford the new fees, and 3) industry innovation due to fees for creation of supplements with new ingredients or novel ingredient combinations.

😳Fear and lack of full understanding can be disempowering.

💪🏿Empower yourself with the facts so you can decide for yourself where you stand on this issue, and what actions you might take as a result - whether you are a consumer or business buying or selling natural health products.

😍 PS: If you want to take positive action on this topic, here is what you can do:
1. Go to https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/programs/consultation-proposed-fees-natural-health-products.html and submit your opinion.

2. Go to Save Your Supplements https://www.saveoursupplements.ca/get-involved and fill out the form for a message to your Member of Parliament. If you have the time personalize the message, and even better book a meeting with your local Member of Parliament.

3. Send a letter to the Health Minister of Canada.

Copy of the letter I wrote to my MP:

As a constituent residing in Skeena--Bulkley Valley, I'm asking for your urgent help. Health Canada is implementing new cost recovery fees for the natural health product (NHPs) industry that has the potential to significantly impact consumers, local small & medium sized businesses, and cultural diversity. I and many others in your constituency rely on NHPs, which include basic everyday products such as toothpaste, vitamins, probiotics and fibre, as part of my proactive healthcare.

Ideally before the cost recovery fees are finalized, there would be an economic and cultural impact analysis performed on vulnerable populations that will be impacted by the cost recovery fees, namely:

1. small and medium sized businesses
2. businesses selling traditional NHPs like Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda Medicine and indigenous origin NHPs.

For example, what will be the impact of the current proposed feed on consumer access to TCM/ayurveda/indigenous origin NHPs? Will they be able to access them, or will too many small businesses close and limit access?

Will individuals then resort to buying these and other NHPs online internationally, so that there is less safety for consumers and also less income for Canadian businesses?

Will local small and medium businesses that make natural soaps, sunscreens, supplements and other products that provide variety and culture to Canadians be able to stay profitable enough that they can continue operating? Or will we lose these businesses and be left with large corporations, thus negatively impacting our industry economy and culture?

While the intent of the proposed mitigation measures for small businesses is appropriate, as far as I can tell there has been no actual analysis performed on the financial impact on a sample of small businesses to determine if the cost recovery fees plus mitigation will allow them to remain in business. Rather than an educated guess, the analysis should be performed and a sliding scale mitigation that supports business and cultural diversity could be implemented.

The current proposed cost recovery fees could be reasonable, or they could significantly harm the NPH industry. We do not know because the full economic and cultural diversity impact analysis has not been done. This should be done prior to finalizing the fees, and would help reduce the fear and anxiousness of consumers and businesses alike.

The consultation for this program closes August 10, 2023 so action before then is important, however input at any point prior to the finalization of these fees will make a difference. As my MP, I'm asking you to be my voice and act before it's too late.
