Niger evacuees return to Europe

The first Europeans to be evacuated from Niger have landed in Paris, and have been speaking about their experiences during the coup. A military junta seized power in Niamey recently, ousting former President Mohamed Bazoum and sparking a mixed response from the country’s neighbors, and condemnation in the West.

Tensions, however, remain high. The father of one evacuee revealed that in Niger ‘there really is an anti-French feeling.’ Others worry about military escalation, especially after an ultimatum given by ECOWAS (the Economic Community of West African States) to reinstate Bazoum in one week or potentially face military intervention.
