A jury found two Salinas men guilty of murdering two 14-year-old boys during Salinas' most violent year in recent history.

Matthew Ruiz and Albert Hernandez' family members broke into tears and two women had to leave the courtroom when the jury's verdict was announced in court Wednesday afternoon.

Ruiz and Hernandez, now both 20 years old, were tried as adults for the Oct. 14, 2009, quadruple shooting and double slaying on Archer Street near Hartnell College.

The jury found the duo guilty of two counts of first-degree premeditated murder and two counts of attempted murder with gang enhancements.

Ruiz and Hernandez were riding in a Honda with the 14-year-olds, Rodolfo Cristobal and Ociel Montiel, and two other teenagers when they opened fire and shot everyone else crammed inside the car.

Cristobal and Montiel were killed. A third boy, who was the driver and identified only as Juan, survived despite being shot in the head at close range. A fourth boy, identified as Christian, also survived and was paralyzed from his gunshot wounds.

Salinas police said the execution-style murders were highly calculated and planned-out by the Norteno street gang, which wanted to kill rival Sureno gangsters.

"On the day of the shooting, Ruiz and Hernandez, both Norteno gang members, went to the area of Elkington Street in Salinas, posing as Sureno gang members," prosecutor Charles Olvis said.

Ruiz and Hernandez told the other boys in the car that they wanted to hunt for Norteno gang members to get revenge, so they all went for a ride, Olvis said.

The Archer Street double murder happened in 2009, when 29 gang-motivated homicides happened in Salinas and few suspects were arrested.
