Turf War: S.F. Hustlers vs L.A. Crips
In this video, I answer the question why the bay area has no Blood or Crip presence.
It's a strange fact, but there is no significant Crips presence in the Bay Area. The Crips, after all, are one of the most widespread gangs in America, C-Walking through neighborhoods in major cities and small towns from San Diego to the Bronx.
The story of how this happened is filled with apocrypha and speculation. There is no official record, just gang lore passed down from O.G.s to young bucks. While some former local gang members have their own analyses, they all tell variations on the same narrative.
It all started in South Central Los Angeles in the late 1970s. Born from the ashes of the disintegrating Black Panthers, the Crips were forged by poverty, anger, ambition, and a desire to protect the community from police brutality. The gang spread quickly, as visiting friends carried the culture back to their own cities and original members relocated to initiate branches elsewhere.
The Crips made a move to San Francisco in the early '80s, a small group of them setting up shop in Bayview-Hunters Point. The recruitment pitch was simple: We're here to take over; join our growing drug empire and make some money. It had worked in Bakersfield, Fresno, and Sacramento. But San Francisco wasn't having it.
“They were all about reppin' their blue and showing off these dances — we thought all that was silly,” says Gyno Frazier, a former Richmond gang member with ties to Bayview-Hunters Point, who heard the tale from older friends. They assumed people would just catch on and join. But that didn't happen.
To the young hustlers the Crips were trying to recruit, the gang's traditions seemed an unnecessary distraction from their main goal: profit. Worse, the Crips were trying to become new middlemen between dealer and supply.
“San Francisco, see, we were all about making money,” says Rudy Corpuz, a former SOMA gang member who now runs the youth group United Playaz. “And the Crips guys were trying to get a cut of that.”
With their modest contingent, the Crips displaced the locals at a Bayview housing project drug market. But the hustlers who got kicked off their land came back strong.
“They underestimated how fierce some of those San Francisco cats could be,” says Corpuz.
Some say that neighboring San Francisco sets joined forces with the displaced group. Some say the displaced group fought on its own. Either way, there was a shootout at the housing project and the Crips were driven out. They haven't returned since. And the Bloods haven't even tried.
In prison yards and mess halls, aging Southern California Crips still reminisce about the gang's failed attempt to take San Francisco, notes Frazier, who spent four years in federal prison for a drug charge. Some of those Crips respect Bay Area inmates a little more for it. Some resent it.
“That's what makes the Bay Area so unique,” Frazier says, “We're the one place in California that doesn't have Crips and Bloods.”

The guilty pleas from Operation Red Reaper, which targeted the Nuestra Familia prison gang and the Norteño street gang.
The federal, state, and local law enforcement operation produced more than 50 arrests. Twenty-three defendants faced federal charges.
Nuestra Familia translates to “our family” in English. The gang began in Folsom State Prison in 1968, with its members primarily inmates (“Nortenos”) who were being brutalized by Mexican Mafia gang inmates (“Surenos”).
Authorities describe Nuestra Familia as well-organized with a formal leadership structure and a constitution. It levies “taxes” on drug deals conducted by street-level Nortenos.

Sept. 2, 2008, two men five miles apart were shot and left lying in their own blood.
The first, Roberto Cervantes, age 55 and a father of five, was shot outside his West Alisal Street home across from Hartnell College. He died hours later in a hospital.
The second man, Adrian Carranza, 24, was shot 90 minutes later, on the 2100 block of Perez Street. A teen boy who was with Carranza was injured and survived, and a woman with them escaped uninjured. Carranza died three days later in a hospital.
Early on, police suspected Carranza was shot by Roberto’s son, Juan Antonio Cervantes, who at the time was just shy of his 20th birthday. Salinas Police won’t confirm many details about the case today, but in May 2009, Sgt. Don Cline told the Monterey County Herald that Carranza’s homicide was considered retaliation for Roberto’s death.
Even with those suspicions in mind, when Cervantes was arrested seven months after the murder, on April 8, 2009, it was not for murder but for gun possession. A month later, the new police chief Louis Fetherolf touted that arrest, among others, at a press conference lauding members of the public for coming forward with information.
“Cervantes is the primary suspect in one gang-related homicide and is being investigated for other homicides and shootings as well,” he told reporters. The guns confiscated during the arrest, he said, were “directly tied to homicides in Salinas.”
Four months later, on Sept. 9, 2009, Cervantes entered a plea of no contest to felony possession of a firearm, and admitted to a gang-related charge.
He was sentenced to four years and four months in prison, but placed on probation. His probation was revoked a few months later, after he was arrested for hanging out with a gang member.
It would take eight more years – during which Cervantez had multiple interactions with law enforcement, including another arrest, conviction and time in prison on domestic violence charges – until Cervantes was arrested for the murder of Carranza and the attempted murders of the teen and the woman who were with him.
Salinas Police report that two officers spotted him on July 30, in an Oldtown restaurant. He was arrested without a struggle and booked into Monterey County Jail on charges of premeditated murder and attempted murder.

Gang War: Norteño vs Sureño Gang Rivalry Violence Rises in Yakima, Washington (News)
Recent drive-by shootings suggest that the tensions between Yakima’s Norteño and Sureño street gangs are entering a more violent phase, Yakima police say.
The two most prominent gang organizations in the Valley and the city of Yakima, Washington are the Norteño and Sureño gangs, which are subdivided into a couple dozen individual gangs. The Norteño and Sureño gangs trace their roots back to the California prison system. They are typically distinguished by the use of red and blue colors respectively.

In a Fresno murder trial that began Wednesday, both sides agree that a young man with gang tattoos on his face and neck killed an older man in a gruesome stabbing that was recorded when the accused killer inadvertently made a 911 butt dial to Fresno police.
What’s in dispute in Fresno County Superior Court is whether Christian Joel Medina, 20, acted in self-defense when he killed 27-year-old Leonel Ortega on Feb. 19, 2013.
The killing happened at the Casa Blanca Apartments on Marks Avenue near McKinley Avenue, west of Highway 99. The trial in Judge Arlan Harrell’s courtroom will give a glimpse into the violent gang feud between the Norteños and the Bulldogs.
In opening statements of the trial, prosecutor William Terrence contended Medina committed first-degree murder because Ortega was unarmed when he was stabbed five times, including three times in the back. Fresno defense attorney Linden Lindahl, however, told the jury that Ortega initiated the fight when he asked Medina: “What’s up, dog?” The phase is a challenge to fight. Lindahl contends Ortega attacked Medina and Medina had to defend himself against a much older and bigger man.
Medina was 17 years old when he was arrested after the killing. He is being tried as an adult because of the seriousness of the crime. If convicted of first-degree murder, Medina faces a minimum of 26 years to life in prison.
Terrence said police learned of the killing when Medina inadvertently made a 911 call from his cell phone while he was stabbing Ortega. Jurors will hear the 911 call to get insight into the deadly confrontation.
In presenting his case, Terrence said Ortega had methamphetamine and marijuana in his body, but not enough to cause his own death. He said Medina is a West Fresno Norteño, a subset of the larger Norteño criminal street gang, with many gang tattoos to show his allegiance.
According to Terrence, Medina killed Ortega to promote the Norteño criminal street gang. Lindahl, however, told the jury that Medina left the West Fresno Norteño gang after his best friend, Joe Anthony Rodriguez, was killed by gang violence in January 2013.
Both sides agree that Medina was a foster teen who was living in a group home on Marty Avenue near Clinton Avenue, west of Highway 99, when the killing happened.
During the evening hours of Feb. 19, 2013, Medina and his friend Mark Miranda left the group home to smoke marijuana, drink alcohol and hang out at the Casa Blanca Apartments, where Medina knew one of the female residents, Terrence said. Ortega, who was known as “Lil Leo,” also lived at the apartment complex with his longtime girlfriend, he said.
Shortly before 9 p.m., Ortega left the apartment and was headed to a store when he crossed paths with Medina. The pair didn’t know each other.
“What’s up, dog? Do you bang?” Ortega said.
Terrence said Ortega and Medina began to argue. Medina’s friend Danielle Rodriguez, who lives at the apartments, heard the commotion and left her apartment with hopes of breaking up the fight, Terrence said. By then, the altercation was headed to the parking lot of the complex with “Ortega backing up and Medina advancing toward him,” Terrence told the jury.
Rodriguez got between the two combatants, but couldn’t break up the altercation. According to Terrence, when Medina reached into his pocket and pulled out a 10-inch hunting knife, Rodriguez told him: “Stop. Don’t do this.”
Instead of listening to Rodriguez, Terrence said, Medina put his hand around Rodriguez’s throat, pushed her away and said: “Get out of my way. You’re keeping me from getting to him.”
Medina caught up to Ortega and stabbed him, causing him to fall to the ground in the parking lot near Marks Avenue, Terrence said. Medina and Miranda then ran back to the group home.
Medina’s inadvertent 911 call led to police to the crime scene, Terrence said. There, Rodriguez told police that Medina was in an altercation and armed with a knife, Terrence told the jury.
Police later searched Medina’s room at the group home and found a hunting knife in his closet, Terrence said.

Gang War: A Serial Killer Norteño Gang Member (News)
A federal grand jury returned murder charges against Anthony Valdez aka “Hitter,” aka “Tony Boronda,” and Kristopher Purcell, aka “K-Dawg,” announced United States Attorney Alex G. Tse and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge John F. Bennett. The superseding indictment supplements charges brought October 11, 2018, against Purcell.
According to the indictment, Valdez, 21, and Purcell, 20, both of Salinas, Calif., are Norteño gang members and members of the Boronda Boys street gang. Valdez and Purcell, along with other Boronda Boys street gang members and associates, are accused of forming a “murder squad” that hunted and killed rival gang members, gang dropouts, and others who violated gang rules. The murder squad also targeted those perceived to be rival gang members and other persons when it suited the purposes of the gang.
In this case, Valdez and others are alleged to have murdered a victim on North Hebbron Avenue in Salinas on November 3, 2018. Valdez is charged with racketeering conspiracy.
Purcell is alleged to have murdered a victim on Fremont Street in Salinas on February 11, 2017. Purcell remains charged with attempting to murder two victims on Orchard Avenue in Salinas the next day, February 12, 2017.
If convicted of murder in aid of racketeering, the defendants would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison or death.

A jury found two Salinas men guilty of murdering two 14-year-old boys during Salinas' most violent year in recent history.
Matthew Ruiz and Albert Hernandez' family members broke into tears and two women had to leave the courtroom when the jury's verdict was announced in court Wednesday afternoon.
Ruiz and Hernandez, now both 20 years old, were tried as adults for the Oct. 14, 2009, quadruple shooting and double slaying on Archer Street near Hartnell College.
The jury found the duo guilty of two counts of first-degree premeditated murder and two counts of attempted murder with gang enhancements.
Ruiz and Hernandez were riding in a Honda with the 14-year-olds, Rodolfo Cristobal and Ociel Montiel, and two other teenagers when they opened fire and shot everyone else crammed inside the car.
Cristobal and Montiel were killed. A third boy, who was the driver and identified only as Juan, survived despite being shot in the head at close range. A fourth boy, identified as Christian, also survived and was paralyzed from his gunshot wounds.
Salinas police said the execution-style murders were highly calculated and planned-out by the Norteno street gang, which wanted to kill rival Sureno gangsters.
"On the day of the shooting, Ruiz and Hernandez, both Norteno gang members, went to the area of Elkington Street in Salinas, posing as Sureno gang members," prosecutor Charles Olvis said.
Ruiz and Hernandez told the other boys in the car that they wanted to hunt for Norteno gang members to get revenge, so they all went for a ride, Olvis said.
The Archer Street double murder happened in 2009, when 29 gang-motivated homicides happened in Salinas and few suspects were arrested.

Phillip Nutt AKA Filthy Phil out of the Bay Area California was a rapper active on the hip-hop scene since the late 80s. In 1992, Filthy Phil made "The Manhunt" while on the run from the FBI for shooting a police officer. He was featured on America's Most Wanted.
Victims' rights and missing-children advocate John Walsh hosts this long-running show, dedicated to bringing criminals to justice. He appeals to viewers to be on the lookout for criminals profiled on the show. The show was briefly canceled by FOX in 1996 before being brought back, and retitled "America's Most Wanted: America Fights Back," because of overwhelming support from viewers and government officials. When FOX canceled it again in May 2011, Lifetime stepped up to the plate and ordered an additional season of the show, which once again airs under the original "America's Most Wanted" title.
