Which Was Better? Super Mario 2 vs Super Mario 3 Mini Games

Two absolute classics of retro video games have to be Super Mario Bros 2 and Super Mario Bros 3. Each of them built upon the games that came before them, each one doing things a little bit differently. They each also had something very much in common, they both had their own mini-games. Between the two of them, however, each of the mini-games were a little bit different.

In Super Mario Bros two, you actually have a game that you can play at the end of each and every level. Depending on how many coins you collect you can have different chances to spin the slot machine at the very end of the level. The more coins you have, the more chances you have to spend. What can you possibly win? Well, depending on what items you can line up, you can get extra lives to try to traverse further into the game.

Super Mario Bros 3 had two different mini-games, one of which was a memory sort of mini-game where you flipped cards over and if you matched an item you got that in rear inventory. It also had a spade level where, similar to the slot machine game in Super Mario 2, you had the line things up to see if you could win a prize. Unlike Super Mario Bros 2, the slot machine was horizontal versus vertical, and you only got one chance to play. If you didn't line everything up, you were done.

Both are extremely challenging, but the fact that you could get multiple swings at the mini-game in Super Mario 2, at least to me, makes it a little bit easier. You had more bites at the apple to try to go ahead and get extra lives. And Super Mario Bros 3, you are one and done. If you didn't do it you had to wait until the next map.

Which one of these mini-games was your favorite? I think I personally preferred the intro graphic to Super Mario Bros 3, with Mario and Toad looking and talking with each other. Still, I prefer the gameplay mechanic in Super Mario Bros 2.
