The BEST Xbox 360 Controller? Retro Fighters Hunter 360 Wireless Review
In this episode, we unbox and thoroughly test the Hunter 360 wireless controller from Retro Fighters, designed for the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs. Is this the ultimate replacement for your old 360 pad?
If there are three constants in my gaming life, it's that I'm not an RPG guy, I don't love Breath of the Wild... and I HATE the original Xbox 360 controller. That battery hump was a design flaw that made the system uncomfortable to play for me! For years, I've had one major gripe with the Xbox 360: the controller. Seriously, the original 360 gamepad is one of the reasons I rarely played the system (even though I own the awesome Star Wars edition!).
But a game-changer just arrived from Retro Fighters: the Wireless Hunter 360 Gamepad! Designed specifically for the Xbox 360 and PC, Retro Fighters set out to create a better, more comfortable experience. And let me tell you—they delivered!

What Makes the Hunter 360 Superior?
Goodbye, Battery Hump! To me, one of the single biggest flaws of the original 360 controller is GONE! The Hunter 360 completely eliminates that awkward, oversized battery hump that ruins the grip. This change alone makes it feel infinitely better.
Next-Gen Tech: This controller is packed with modern features:
Hall Effect Analog Sticks: Say goodbye to stick drift—forever!
Ultra-Low Latency: A 1000Hz Polling Rate via 2.4 GHz wireless technology ensures a near-zero lag experience.
Premium Build: The sticks feel buttery smooth, and the overall ergonomics are fantastic, feeling very similar to their popular Brawler 64 controller.
Improved Ergonomics: The overall shape and feel are excellent, reminding me a lot of the beloved Brawler 64 controller.
This might just be the nicest Xbox 360 controller I have ever used.
Initial impressions:
I've always disagreed with the decision to include an external battery pack on the original Xbox 360 controller. That huge hump on the back was super inconvenient and negatively impacted the ergonomics.
I love that the Hunter 360 wireless controller completely eliminates this, resulting in a nice, smooth back. If you've held a newer Xbox Series X controller or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, the feel of the Hunter 360 will be very familiar.
A minor note: I still wish third-party manufacturers would follow the example of the Super Nintendo and add both concave and convex buttons. This small design change makes it much easier to tactically feel your way around the controller without looking.
Gameplay
From the moment I started playing, the Hunter 360 wireless felt completely locked in. The controller simply worked, whether I was playing action platformers, racing games, or puzzlers.
The controller never became something I had to consciously think about, which is the mark of a great peripheral. (The only time I focused on it was when a game prompted me to press a button by color, as I don't have those memorized.)
As noted above, the addition of concave and convex buttons would be a welcome improvement for quicker, more tactile navigation.
When I went to play Forza Horizon 2, I did notice that the back triggers did not exactly feel like they were analog; they felt more digital. Unfortunately, none of my other racing games that I have for the 360 would load, and my original Xbox racing games are not compatible with the 360. Awesome.
Why it RoX:
- Massively improved ergonomics
- Can be used on Xbox 360 or PC
- They labeled the dongle!
- Hall effect sticks
- Adjustable rumble
- I may actually play my 360 now
What could be improved:
- Triggers did not read as analog in Forza
- General Xbox complaint: all the buttons feel the same
Should you buy one?
Listen, I know that I am in the minority in hating the original Xbox 360 controller, I will grant that. This is simply the finest Xbox 360 controller I've ever used. I had fun playing the games, the controller was comfortable, it was precise, it did everything it should have. The hall effect sticks felt terrific, and the overall balance and weight of the controller is great as well. Battery life is fantastic, overall there's few things I can Nick this controller for. If you are looking to replace or upgrade your original Xbox 360 controller, this should be one of the first ones on your list to check out.
