‘This was a carefully considered decision’ – South African presidential spokesperson on BRICS summit

Vladimir Putin will not attend next month’s BRICS summit in Johannesburg in person, as was agreed earlier between the organization’s members. He will participate in the event via video link. South African opposition party, the EFF, has criticized the government’s decision-making, saying the national leadership didn’t do enough to provide security for Putin if he were to visit.

We spoke to the South African presidential spokesperson, who says the importance of Russia’s participation at the summit remains unchanged.
