North Korea has reportedly launched a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), according to Japanese and South Korean officials. Japan's Defense Ministry detailed that the missile was launched from North Korea's interior, reaching a record flight duration of 74 minutes and covering a distance of around 1,000 kilometers before splashing down outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

This provocative act comes in response to perceived US spy plane incursions, escalating security concerns across the region. The ICBM, which Pyongyang describes as its "most powerful," continues to be tested despite intensified joint military drills by the US and South Korea.

The South Korean and US officials convened an immediate meeting post-launch, underlining their "strengthened" joint defense and condemning North Korea's actions as a "grave provocative act" violating UN Security Council resolutions.

The launch is viewed as a sign of North Korea prioritizing weapons over its citizens' well-being, triggering the South Korean President to call an emergency meeting from the NATO summit in Lithuania. Amid escalating tensions, experts warn that North Korea may showcase its latest military hardware in late July, during the celebration of the Korean War armistice.
