Iceland's Fagradalsfjall volcano has begun erupting after weeks of seismic activity, sparking fears that it could release toxic gas into the surrounding area. Icelandic police have closed off access to the volcano, located 20 miles from the capital Reykjavik, and nearby residents have been advised to stay at home with their windows closed and ventilation turned off.

Some foolhardy explorers, however, are seemingly determined to witness the spectacular eruption for themselves. Police released a statement on Monday night which read, ‘It is highly likely that gas will build up around the eruption site due to low wind. Those who have already undertaken the hike to the eruption site, or are already there, are strongly advised to leave the area.’
