Viking Shift Underdress Tutorial | How to Sew Basic Medieval Underwear
Today I am making myself a shift to eventually go with a Viking apron dress! In later centuries, a shift became known as a smock or chemise. It is the layer worn closest to the body to help absorb bodily oils. Due to the the cost of making fabric, patterns for clothes were very efficient in their use of fabric.

Since linen is difficult to dye, linen undergarments (such as a shift) were left undyed. Danish Viking women preferred plain undergarments, while Swedish Viking women preferred pleats. Neckholes were typically triangular or rounded. Shifts typically had godets (large triangles) on the sides to allow for a fuller skirt, along with gussets (also triangles) in the armpits to allow for more range of motion with the sleeves.
