Let's say you have a patient with a heart rate of 87 beats/min. Then, after suctioning, it drops down to 46 beats/min. What could cause something like this to happen? This is actually very common and most likely has something to do with the vagus nerve.
➡️ What is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve a cranial nerve in the brain that is part of the autonomic nervous system which controls involuntary bodily functions. It's connected to several motor and sensory functions, including the heart. So when a suction catheter is inserted and passed through the trachea, as it stimulates the vagus nerve, it will trigger a vasovagal response that results in bradycardia. This would explain why the patient's heart decreased so much in such a short period of time. This response can be dangerous in some patients, especially if they have underlying cardiac issues. However, it can also be beneficial in some patients as well.
➡️ For example:
If a patient were to have a very fast heart rate, the physician could request tracheal suctioning to intentionally cause vagal stimulation in order to try to decrease the heart back to normal. So this is just something to keep in mind while suctioning. If you see a rapid decrease in the patient's heart rate, you would know that vagal stimulation has most likely occurred.
