➡️ Breath-Actuated Nebulizer Definition
A breath-actuated nebulizer only generates aerosols when the patient inhales which is important because it prevents medication doses from being wasted. When a patient takes a breath in, negative pressure is created which activates the device so that medication is drawn into a reservoir and aerosols can be generated.

➡️ Breath-Actuated Nebulizer Benefits
Aside from limiting the amount of medication that is wasted, breath-actuated nebulizers also have some other benefits including:
- Greater inhaled doses
- Less environmental contamination
- Increased treatment time

➡️ Do They Work?
One study compared the use of breath-actuated nebulizers to typical small-volume nebulizers in patients with COPD. During the study, researchers monitored groups of patient's inspiratory capacity and dyspnea levels in order to compare the two devices. The results showed that the patients who used breath-actuated nebulizers had lower respiratory rates and a greater change in inspiratory capacity compared to those who used small-volume nebulizers. There was no significant difference in dyspnea levels between the two devices.
