"Everything I Own," written by David Gates, was Bread's 7th consecutive top 40 hit rising to the no. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972 (Whitburn, 2013). But in Britain, two cover versions of Gates' song rose to the no. 1 position: Ken Boothe (1974, no. 1) and Boy George (1987, no. 1) (Kutner & Leigh, 2005). The inspiration for the song came from an unusual place -- David Gates' father's funeral. "A friend took David aside and said, 'Your dad was so proud of what you were doing.' David agreed by replying, 'My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record Everything I Own about him. If you listen to the words, 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,' it says it all'" (Kutner & Leigh, 2005, p. 204)
