Dr. Donald K. Layman, professor Emeritus Department Food Science and Human Nutrition, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, teaches us the more you consume protein, the more you train your kidneys to become efficient. Protein is only and issue for those with a RARE urea cycle disorder where the liver isn't able to do its usual thing, allowing nitrogen to build up in the blood in the form of ammonia.

Prof Layman is internationally recognized for his research about dietary protein and amino acids. He has extensive research focused on muscle development and in studies of metabolic regulation for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Doctorate degree in nutrition and biochemistry
Master’s degree in biochemistry

Layman notes that it's totally safe for healthy adults to take in up to 3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. For a 140-pound woman, that is 90 grams of protein per day. It might be safe to have even more, but researchers haven’t tested the theory because there’s no real reason to eat that much protein every day.

As a conservative amount, Layman recommends that most people consume between 1.2 and 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram body weight—roughly 90 to 140 grams—of protein per day.
