What started as a simple student protest in the township of Soweto in June 1976 became an uprising that spread throughout the country. June 16, known as Youth Day in South Africa, commemorates that student demonstration and has come to symbolize the fight of black people against the system of Apartheid for more than four decades.
South African reporter Katlego Msomi has more on the history of this event.
