June Mushroom Identification in a Beautiful Forest
In this video the vice president of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, Aaron Hilliard, takes us on a walk into the forest to discover what mushrooms might be growing next to the trail, how to identify them, whether they are good to eat or not, and what they're called scientifically and their common name.
A lifetime of fascination with mushrooms led to the birth of this channel and a whole ton of foraging videos just like this one for you to delight in. Aaron has been studying mushrooms for a long time, and is what you would consider a citizen mycologist. Keeping current with taxonomy can be a challenge but have Mushroom Wonderland we try our best. Hopefully this channel appeals to the experienced mushroom forager as well as the brand new person interested in going to look for food in the wild!
In this video we come across some of the mushrooms that will tolerate the warmer temperatures and dryer conditions of early summer. We start off by looking at bird nest fungi, Nidula niveotomentosa, a very bizarre and complex little fungus that likes to grow on twigs. Then we look at another twig loving mushroom, The Alpine jellycone, Guipiniopsis alpina. We stumble across a couple of beautiful deer shield mushrooms in the forest growing on a dead stump, Pluteus cervinus. We come across a big cluster of beautiful Mica caps, Coprinellus micaceus, which are okay to eat but have a very short shelf life. We find a strange and someone rare bolete called the Xerocomellus diffractus. We also come across a couple of past their prime shaggy parasols, Chlorophyllum rachodes. We get to look at the beautiful sweating metabolites on a Red belted conch, Fomitopsis mounceae. We also talk about Forest health and ecology, the checklist to an old growth forest, and other random mycological banter.
