Surprising Fungal Finds! Mushrooming in Late November
In this video, Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula mycological Society and creator of Mushroom Wonderland, takes us on a walk into the chilly forest of late November in Western Washington to discover some amazing mushrooms, and to show a comparison of two mushrooms that you should surely know about!
After spending over 30 years studying mushrooms and foraging in the field, Aaron has acquired a great knowledge of mushrooms in their taxonomic information as well as the edibility, potential for toxicity or hallucinogenic qualities.
Aaron is happy to bring all of this information to you on these videos for free, but some support would be nice if you want to jump over to the patreon, link is below.
This video, is a little bit unusual, because it's very low production as far as editing goes. Just kind of straightforward walk through the forest with my dogs talking about the mushrooms we find. And we come across I'm pretty unexpected and amazing ones.

Wild Mushroom Nature Walk- November 2023
Let's go on a nature walk and discover the wild mushrooms growing next to the trail! Vice President of the Kitsap Peninsula mycological Society, mushroom enthusiast and educator, and creator of Mushroom Wonderland, Aaron Hilliard takes us on a walk to discover what fungi are growing in the forest of Western Washington this time of year. Mushrooms come in many different shapes and sizes, and can be very interesting yet intimidating to want to forage for the dinner table. This channel aims to help educate about mushrooms, their uses and edibility, and their identification and taxonomy. Aaron is constantly learning and is neck deep in the mycological community staying current with taxonomic information and trying to learn new techniques and purposes for the different mushrooms. In this video he simply goes out into the beautifully enchanted Northwest Forest to help describe what mushrooms he finds along the way.
This video is not necessarily intended for beginners or advanced mycologists, just an all-around informational guide and ASMR kind of walk into the woods.
The hope is that everybody is cozy in their homes this Thanksgiving morning, and maybe tunes in to watch some charming mushroom infotainment. See you all down the mushroom trail!

Wild Mushroom Foraging in October 2023
Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society and long time fungi enthusiast, amateur mycologist and long-time forager, takes us on a walk into the forest of Mushroom Wonderland (Western Washington). As we go along, Aaron will ID and describe the trailside mushrooms to help give you a better understanding of just what those mushrooms are on the side of the trail, and that ever important question- are they edible or poisonous!
On our walk we come across beautiful but toxic Agaricus deardorffensis, which could be confused for a good edible. Then we find 'Sulfur Tufts,' Hypholoma fasciculare," their close and edible relative Hypholoma capnoides. We see beautiful 'Honey Mushrooms," Armillaria species, and look at all of the features of these common mushrooms. We find Suillus lakei, with parasitic Gomphidius. We look at the very beautiful and fragrant Clitocybe odora. We also see the differences between false Chanterelles, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca- and the beautiful and sought after Pacific Golden Chanterelle, Cantharellus formosus. We discuss habitat and seasonality of different fungi.
Aaron not only forages for edible mushrooms, but he collects them for science. You can look up his observations on www.inaturalist.org if you search his name. You, too, can contribute to science if you sign up on the app or website and join in the projects for fungi. Mycology needs all the help it can get when it comes to tracking and understanding the lifestyles, populations, and habitats of fungi throughout the world.

Magic Mushrooms of North America- Alan Rockefeller 2023 at Olympic Peninsula Fungi Festival
Amazing, world renowned mushroom expert Alan Rockefeller, gives a lecture on Tryptamine fungi and new taxonomy of Psilocybin Mushrooms of North America, and was nice enough to let us upload it all for you to watch free here on Mushroom Wonderland. With detailed descriptions and high definition of photos laid over the talk from Aland slides, this is maybe the most important talk about these kinds of mushrooms currently on the internet.
Psilocybin containing mushrooms cover several genera of fungi, acquiring their psychoactive effects through horizontal gene transfer through different families of basidiomycete fungi. Psilocybin in conjunction with the active chemical psilocin, have a way of distorting the senses for 4-6 hours after ingestion. People have been using these mushrooms for ceremonial, spiritual, and recreational use for thousands of years. This lecture depicts all of the scientific understanding of the taxonomy of North America to current date.
This is not to be used for illicit purposes. We do not condone the use of toxic mushrooms. This is for scientific purposes only and is to advance the understanding of this class of fungi.

Foraging in Rural India- Mushrooms and Plants
On this episode of Mushroom Wonderland we head to the complete opposite side of the world to a place called Visakhapatnam, India- actually to a small village about 45 minutes outside of the city, and we forage wild plants and mushrooms with some helpful locals, girls of an orphanage, who were more than excited to help us out.
This is at an orphanage called 'Children of Faith,' a place that houses 120 kids ranging from 5 years old, to in their 20's. Most of the kids that live here are from very poor villages that do not offer decent education and most are from broken families. This place offers them a good education, meals, housing, and lots of love. This organization runs on donations from people like you, if you would like to contribute to the cause, you can at the link right here..
https://www.childrenoffaithmissions.org/
We were so honored to get to know these kids, especially the main 4 girls in this video, Harika, Enusha, Ramia, and Lakita. We really wish them the best and we know they will go far in life. We also had amazing hosts who fed us the local cuisine and showed us around, and taught us about the local traditions. Anand and Rosie run the orphanage and do a great job of it, the kids love them and all 120 of them call them 'mommy and daddy.' It really is a great thing they have going.
Join us as we walk out near the rice and okra fields to discover what's growing in this area of Mushroom Wonderland!

Mycology professor Dr. Michael Beug- Paul Stamets teacher speaks about mushrooms
Dr. Michael Beug started the mycology department at Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington and was teacher to big names in mushrooms such as Paul Stamets, Jonathan Ott and Jeremy Bigwood, all who went on to write amazing books on the subject of mycology. Paul is arguably the most popular mushroom personality in the world.
In this video, Michael Beug was kind enough to let me record one of his talks from the stage at the Gorge Fungi Foray, near his home in Trout Lake Washington for a crowd of onlookers and fungi fanatics.

Dead Mans Foot Mushroom - Pisolithus arrhizus : AKA The Dye Ball, Dog Turd Fungi
Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, and his 5 year old daughter Aliyah discover a dead mans foot!! Well, its not an actual dead mans foot, its a mushroom that goes by that "common name." This mushroom has been long used for dyeing fabrics amazing colors, but you wouldn't know by looking at it, because it looks like a clot of dirt or maybe a dried out dog turd.
This is a mycorrhizal fungi, meaning it associates with trees and plants, and where some mushrooms might be picky about their host, or partner if you will, this mushroom is pretty opportunistic. This particular one is growing in the crunchy yellow grass in a small space between the sidewalk and the gutter, and seems to come back year after year. It is truly amazing that anything can live in the small habitat that it was growing in, but it definitely has to do with the mycorrhizae, because there is no other way this thing could have mustard up the energy to grow into what it was, without some outside help.
Make sure to subscribe to the channel and check the other videos. This is a very short video, most of the channels videos are longer form foray videos with lots of beautiful, interesting, deadly, and delicious mushrooms! Mushlove!

Edible Wild Mushrooms- Forage and ID, Late Summer 2023
In this video Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, takes us on a walk into Mushroom Wonderland to discover edible wild summer mushrooms, as well as a few other mushrooms that you might come across on the trail this time of year.
It has been a very hot and dry summer, but despite that, Lobster Mushrooms have been growing like crazy, as well as the summer Chanterelles. Both highly regarded and also both featured in this video. Aaron shows the habitat, the mushrooms different morphological features, and describes the mushrooms in great detail to help you be able to confidently ID your own wild mushrooms.
Mushroom foraging is a great pass-time and a wonderful reason to take the family or a loved one out into the woods and connect with nature, so our hope is that you use this channel as a great resource and find helpful tips and insights. Keep in mind that eating wild foraged food has its risks, and there are plants, trees, and mushrooms that can be quite poisonous, so be sure to do your own research and please don't use this shaky cell phone footage to compare your mushroom against. Mushroom Wonderland takes no responsibility for what you forage.

Relaxing Forest with Mushroom Identification (NO TALKING)
This is one of the few ASMR videos that I have released, but I enjoy the peace of nature so much that I thought I would bring it to you. Whether you're just a fan of beautiful forest scenes or are bound to a wheelchair and cant make it to the forest, the hope is that these videos help to relax you and bring you to nature as well as maybe teach you something of the wild mushrooms that grow trailside.
Aaron Hilliard is the creator of Mushroom Wonderland, an amateur mycologist, VP of his local mycological Society in Kitsap County Washington. Aaron has been a lover of the forest and the mushrooms since his childhood. Introduced to wild foraging at a young age by his grandmother, Aaron has always found himself walking the moss covered forests of the Pacific Northwest in search of magical mushrooms to identify and study.
We hope you get value out of this video, please leave a comment as to weather we should make more of these.

Mushroom ID in the Olympic Mountains- Fungi along the Hike
This is a fun video where Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society and his wife take us on a hike to Silver Lakes in the Olympic Mountains of Washington state in the summer time. Aaron describes the mushrooms growing trailside along the way in case you've ever wondered. He gives names, descriptions, edibility and other fun facts. This is a great video if you're a hiker or camper, maybe a survivalist. Hunters and fisherman can benefit from this knowledge. He also picks a wild yellow coral mushroom and shows how to fry them up for a delicious appatizer!

Lobster Mushrooms- The seafood of the Forest. When, where, and how to find them.
In this video Aaron Hilliard of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society takes us on a journey to a local trail to show how easy it is to find Lobster Mushrooms. Lobster mushrooms, AKA Hypomyces lactiflorum, is actually a host mushroom that can be pretty boring, and a parasite that attacks and changes the boring host into a beautiful and amazing edible gourmet mushroom. These can fetch up to $40 lb in American markets and are renowned the world over for their umami seafood-like flavor and beautiful color. They're not hard to find, although we are surprised to see them this early in the year, as they really seem to like the Autumn rains before they start to heavily fruit. This video will help to expose the habitat they grow in and how to spot and identify them. There really are NO LOOKALIKES! well, that's somewhat subjective as everyone's recognition of physical features varies. Make sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell to see upcoming videos. Forage and Cook Spring Coral Mushrooms-
In this video Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, finds wild Ramaria rasilispora, the Yellow Coral Mushroom, growing on the side of a busy hiking trail and picks it, cooks it, and tells us what it tastes like. This mushroom is commonly encountered by mountain hikers in the Northwest and is a popular genus of mushrooms, regarded by some as a valuable edible, and in some people gastric upset is associated with fungi in this genus.
On the hike to Silver Lakes in the eastern Olympic mountains of Washington State is where these specimens were found growing, although they can be found in large quantities in the Cascade Mountains while people are hunting for Morels.
There were no ill effects after eating these mushrooms, but always start by trying a small amount first to be sure they don't disagree with your system.
Be sure to give a thumbs up, and let us know in the comments if these are mushrooms you forage or give us your opinion of them as far as an edible spring/summer mushroom. Be sure to subscribe and follow on the other platforms listed below. Mush love to the people supporting the channel on Patreon.
