Peter Obi, the Labour Party's Presidential candidate in the last election, has criticized the sudden announcement of fuel subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu. According to Obi, the removal of the subsidy without measures in place to alleviate the hardship that comes with it is premature. He made this statement during a media chat at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in Abuja.

Obi believes that the fuel subsidy should be removed, but with conditions that must be applied. He suggested that if he were involved, he would have presented empirical statistical data that shows how much the country will save from the subsidy removal and where the gains will be applied for the people's benefit.
