What are Stand Your Ground Laws?

A stand your ground law is enacted at state level and permits an individual to protect themselves with the use of reasonable force, including deadly force, to prevent death or great bodily harm.

Stand your ground defense does NOT include avoiding having to justify why you used force. There is still a burden of proving justified use of deadly force.

Just because you claim Stand Your Ground doesn’t mean it’s a get out of jail free card. “Reasonable” is an important word. If your actions could be legally deemed unjustifiable you will be charged and asked to face a jury. The jury will decide if they believe the deadly force used was reasonable or not.
