Did you know that women are twice as likely as men to say they had their health concerns dismissed by a GP?

Did you know that women’s health is not as well researched as men’s health?

Advocates have called for a deeper understanding and better education around women’s health, including for doctors.

Leah was a classic example of this.

In her early thirties she went from doctor to specialist for exhaustion, muscle pain, and irregular periods.

Her GP diagnosed her with polycystic ovary syndrome but did not provide her with a treatment plan.

“Nothing was done about it,” she said.

“It was like ‘you have PCOS’ — that’s it.”

PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects between 10% and 28% or 45% (the studies aren’t clear!) of women of reproductive age.

It causes a range of symptoms from extreme pain to infertility to insulin resistance.

For years, Leah was left to navigate this complex and debilitating illness on her own.

Leah’s story had a happy ending, but that is as much as I am legally allowed to tell you.
