FROM OIL TYCOON TO HOLOCAUST MUSEUM | Welwyn Preserve

Hi everyone, welcome to our channel! In this video, we're going to take you on a tour of the Welwyn Preserve, a beautiful and historic place in Glen Cove, New York. Welwyn Preserve is a 204-acre property that was once the estate of Harold Irving Pratt, an oil tycoon and philanthropist. The preserve has four marked nature trails that lead to a wooded stream valley, freshwater ponds, swamps, a coastal salt marsh and a stretch of Long Island Sound shoreline. It's a great place to enjoy nature and wildlife, as well as learn about the history of the Pratt family and their legacy.

One of the most interesting features of the preserve is the Holocaust Memorial & Educational Center, which is housed in the former mansion of the Pratts. The center offers exhibits and programs that educate visitors about the horrors of the Holocaust and the lessons we can learn from it. The center also restored the adjacent garden, which was designed by the famous Olmsted brothers and commissioned by Harriet Pratt, a horticulturist who worked on the 1939 World's Fair and the New York Botanical Gardens.

Another fascinating part of the preserve is the abandoned greenhouses, which are located behind the mansion and can be accessed by a narrow cobblestone path. The greenhouses were once filled with exotic plants and flowers, but now they are overgrown with weeds, vines and graffiti. They have a spooky and surreal atmosphere, especially when you see the old jail cell that was used by the Nassau County Sheriff's Department for training in the 1990s.
