A former FIFA official, Chuck Blazer, played a crucial role in the United States indictment of FIFA officials on racketeering, bribery, wire fraud, and money laundering charges. Blazer used his position to facilitate bribes and kickbacks while promoting soccer in the United States. However, he was caught by the FBI for not paying taxes, which led to him turning informant in exchange for a reduced sentence. His recordings and testimony were instrumental in the American Justice Department's case against FIFA corruption. Without his cooperation, the recent changes in FIFA may not have been possible. Unfortunately, Chuck Blazer, a disgraced U.S. football executive banned for life by FIFA, passed away at 72. He was at the center of the investigations that led to his indictment and 14 others in the broadening FIFA corruption scandal. In 2013, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion and corruption charges. Blazer had cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
