The warm weather over the weekend brought hundreds of young people outside in Chicago, but unfortunately, not all the gatherings were peaceful. Two teens were shot in Downtown and one on the Near South Side. The shootings occurred as large groups of young people gathered, with videos on social media showing hundreds gathered on Friday night near 31st Street Beach and more large groups on Saturday night Downtown. Nine adults and six juveniles were also arrested on Saturday for reckless and disruptive behavior. While some officials have tried to prevent large groups, young people have said they have a right to public spaces. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has said that the city "cannot and will not allow any of our public spaces to become a platform for criminal conduct" and the Police Department has warned that anyone breaking the law will be held accountable.
